This may seem like a dumb question, but there are not universally accepted definitions or applications of coaching. I offer coaching to physician executives who are looking for one or both of 2 things: 1) personal development of your own executive goals or 2) subject matter expertise in aspects of your professional development.
In my personal experience of coaching and being coached- each of us can benefit from the ‘outside view’, especially one that is completely private and devoted only to the client’s success. I work for the client- period. While organizational success may be high on your list of career aspirations, sometimes finding the next job is what you want or need and your current organization may not be meeting your needs. Or you may want to move in your organization.
Coaching is a way of finding support and ideas for how to be successful. An experienced executive can give younger or less experienced executives ideas, feedback, and resources for professional development that you might otherwise not find easily.
